The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a country that truly embodies contrast and ambition. It is a land where desert sands meet futuristic skylines, where tradition is carefully preserved alongside cutting-edge innovation, and where hospitality flows naturally from the people. For travellers, the UAE is much more than shopping malls and skyscrapers—it is a diverse nation with deep cultural roots, incredible experiences, and countless opportunities to explore. Let’s take a journey through this land of dreams and see what makes it so special.

First Impressions – discover with Abdikarim

Landing in Dubai or Abu Dhabi is always breath-taking. The ultra-modern airports are among the best in the world—efficient, luxurious, and welcoming. As soon as you leave the airport, you are greeted by towering skyscrapers, gleaming highways, and a buzz of activity that never seems to end. For me, each visit feels like stepping into both the present and the future at once.

Dubai, in particular, is a city that reinvents itself every year. One visit might bring you to a new art district, another to a freshly opened museum, and yet another to a record-breaking attraction. The UAE is constantly pushing boundaries, and this energy makes traveling here an adventure every time.

Walking Through History

While Dubai is famous for modern marvels, the soul of the city can be found in its traditional markets (souks).

Souk Murshid: Narrow alleys filled with textiles, perfumes, and handcrafted souvenirs. Vendors often come from families who have run these businesses for generations. It’s a wonderful place to practice bargaining while appreciating local hospitality.

The Gold Souk: Perhaps the most dazzling market in the world. Here you will see hundreds of shops glittering with gold jewelry, diamonds, and precious stones. Even if you don’t buy anything, the sheer sight of it is unforgettable.

These souks remind visitors that before oil, pearls, fishing, and trade were the lifeblood of the Emirates. Walking through them connects you to centuries of history.

Icons of Modern Dubai

Dubai’s landmarks are world-famous, and they deserve the hype.

Burj Khalifa: The tallest building in the world. Standing on the observation deck gives you sweeping views of the desert on one side and the blue sea on the other. At night, the fountain show at its base is simply magical.

Burj Al Arab: The sail-shaped hotel on Jumeirah Beach is an icon of luxury. While staying there might be out of reach for most, having afternoon tea inside is a memorable experience.

Dubai Frame: A giant golden picture frame that perfectly captures the contrast between old Dubai on one side and new Dubai on the other.

Palm Jumeirah: An artificial island shaped like a palm tree, home to luxury resorts like Atlantis the Palm. Even if you don’t stay there, visiting its beaches or restaurants is worthwhile.

Museums: Future and Past

Museum of the Future: A stunning architectural masterpiece shaped like a hollow ring. Inside, interactive exhibitions showcase technology, space travel, and sustainability. It feels like stepping into tomorrow.

Louvre Abu Dhabi: A cultural gem on Saadiyat Island. This museum houses priceless artworks from around the world and is as famous for its unique architecture as for its exhibits.

Abu Dhabi’s Majesty

The capital, Abu Dhabi, offers a quieter but equally impressive experience. The population of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi was 3,789,860 in 2023 and crossed the 4 million mark in 2024. For the city of Abu Dhabi itself, the urban area had an estimated population of 2.5 million in 2023.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: One of the most beautiful mosques in the world, with white marble domes, crystal chandeliers, and exquisite mosaics. It welcomes visitors of all faiths and embodies peace and tolerance.

Transport: The Dubai Metro is efficient and affordable. Taxis are reliable and widely used. In Abu Dhabi, taxis and ride-sharing apps are the main options. Car rentals are also convenient.

Money: The UAE Dirham (AED) is pegged to the US dollar. Credit cards are widely accepted, but carrying some cash is useful for small purchases in souks.

Dress Code: Modest clothing is appreciated, especially in mosques or public areas. At beaches and hotels, swimwear is acceptable. Women visiting mosques will be given abayas to wear.

My Reflections

As a traveller, what strikes me most about the UAE is the balance between tradition and modernity. It is a country proud of its heritage yet unafraid to dream big. The hospitality of the Emirati people, combined with world-class infrastructure, makes every visit smooth, safe, and inspiring.

The UAE is more than skyscrapers and luxury—it is a land of opportunity, culture, and human achievement. Whether you are wandering through souks, admiring the Grand Mosque, or gazing at Dubai’s futuristic skyline, you will feel the country’s spirit of innovation and ambition.

Each time I leave the UAE, I carry with me a sense of wonder and inspiration. It is, indeed, a city of dreams and beyond, and one I will keep returning to.
